We are looking forward to welcoming you to Edmonton next week. Our city is starting to emerge into spring. The street cleaners are pushing up clouds of salt and gravel, the river ice has floated off toward Saskatchewan, and everywhere, tiny leaves begin to unfurl. Painted toes and bare knees have been sighted on our campus this week, among the greening blades of grass. We hope you will enjoy yourselves here, and that the weather will remain fine for your week with us.

Here are some tips to ease your journey:

How to connect to the University Wireless (UWS)

Weather in Edmonton: May weather in Edmonton is interesting, to say the least! Take today, for example; this morning was calm, overcast and 6°C; a fleece jacket was fine, but I wished I had gloves on! Then at noon, it was sunny and 13°C; and we rolled down the windows in the car because the sun was so warm.

Best advice? Check the forecast daily at Environment Canada, (link) and dress in layers.

We've included a restaurant guide in your conference package, but on campus you will find HUB Mall, the long narrow building and interior walkway that connects Tory Hall and Business to the southern part of campus, LRT, and the Rutherford Library has a number of food-court amenities, as does SUB (the student union building, which also features our wonderful BOOKSTORE).

Garneau district: On the north-eastern edge of the university, excellent cafes abound. My favorites:

The Sugar Bowl (inventive pub fare, great beer, cheery patio)
High Level Diner (right next door, medium-priced good food, also with patio)
Da Cappo Caffe (site of the Women's Network Lunch, great lattes, house-made gelato)
Transcend Coffee (even makes this former coffee-snob Seattlite happy, and you can pick up some specialty house beans and emergency coffee press for your hotel room)
Decent Japanese fare at Kabuki next door, and Kyoto (quite a lovely room) across the street.
Hipsters like the Remedy Cafe next to Kyoto, and The Urban Diner has great booths, big desserts.
